Community Meeting September 12 - Facility Issues

Notes/Summary/Highlights

Purpose of the Meeting

· Explore solutions to mitigate immediate overcrowding in the Multi (YMCA+Music) within the context of the RVSD long term facility planning process that is just starting.

· Begin the long-term planning conversation with some initial feedback to help inform the design process.

Highlights/Summary

· Build Modular, perhaps even two, (No portables) now out of Measure A funds – an acceptable compromise in order to deal with the immediate overcrowding issue in the Multi (YMCA + Music).

· Most popular locations (of the one’s proposed A-D) for the Modular = Option B & C

· Don’t need to place all three new classrooms in one block. Explore splitting them up.

· Preserve (or replace any lost) garden space as it is a vital aspect of the campus as a learning environment.

· Overcrowding impacts not just the number of classrooms but also Library and Multi.

· Need to continue Part II of the conversation to explore further options for long range solutions such as using the Library and other areas of the campus.

Alternatives & Issues to Explore

· Convert Library back to two classes and build a new Library, perhaps move to Multi and build a new Multi. Rational: Library is too small for increased capacity (computer lab can’t hold a whole class), this would create a nice Kindergarten Quad, and the building was originally designed as two classrooms.

· Expand Multi to accommodate increased capacity - Does not currently have a stage and already feels too crowded for all school events. Current capacity (at 7sqft per person) was stated as about 399. Issue of expanding/moving just a wall was a challenge because it would require earthquake retrofitting and fire/life safety upgrades so it would basically have to be replaced (very expensive).

· Revisit adding a second story

Refinements/Comments on Proposed Options

· Option B&C are remote and isolated to be used as classrooms, probably only viable as Y/Music/Art rooms. Would additional bathrooms be needed? What about covered walk ways?

· 1-2 classes in Option B location could either be moved East, closer to existing classes (perhaps a covered walkway could connect them) or further SW toward field and off of the blacktop.

· Least popular option = Option D - it was awkwardly placed in the middle of the blacktop and created “hidden” space by the bathroom.

· Alternative to Option D – only 2 classes and move it closer/parallel to existing classrooms and relocate bathrooms on the side of it (like the bathrooms at the end of the other classroom row). Rational: could share central walkway with existing classrooms and would preserve more blacktop play space.

If Option A space is used, only 1-2 max classes and push them back up against the hillside to keep the central garden and lunch area open. Concerns about putting classrooms over the culvert

Manor Book Fair 2011

Please come and join us in the library, next Friday night, Sept. 16, 5-7pm, for a sneak preview of Manor's Scholastic Book Fair 2011, held during the Back-to-school BBQ.

Book Fair will then continue the following week during school hours, from Monday sept 19 through Thursday sept 22. Book fair hours are as follows: 8-10am, 12-1pm, and 2-4pm. The money raised goes to YES. These books make great birthday gifts!

Got an hour or two to help set up , run book fair or set down? Please help by signing up - volunteer sign-up sheets are in office and on main corridor community board. Thank you to those who have already signed up!

The friendly and capable Kathy Lake has graciously volunteered to coordinate the back-end collection, data entry, and financial reconciliation piece. Volunteer Jobs Opportunities:

Manor PTA has organized several volunteer opportunities for your pleasure. Please email Anna Simmons, the PTA Volunteer Coordinator, at annasimmons22@gmail.com or call her at 453-3527 if you care to volunteer or have questions.

Here's what needs filling:

1) Hospitality Coordinator/s: involves putting out refreshments a few times a year at meetings and on the first day of school

2) Parent Education Coordinator/s: coordinate a parent education event at Manor and promote the parent education events at other RVSD schools

3) Friends of YES Classroom Reps: distribute information about YES to the parents in your child's classroom

4) YES Assembly Coordinator: work with the principal and teachers to plan YES funded assemblies

5) YES Parties Rep: encourage parents to attend and/or host YES fundraiser parties

6) Classroom Cleaning Supply Coordinator: distribute supplies to refill the cleaning kits that have been distributed to teachers

7) Events Coordinator to assist Heather Sotnick in coordinating the Manor Family Dance and the Lapathon.

Greetings Manor Community,

Week 3 is in the books and I feel like things are going well. I really appreciate the contributions that all of our teachers, support staff and parents are making on a daily basis. Big thanks to the parents of Ms. B.’s room for planting the lovely garden outside her window. This is a great example of how giving this community is.
