Green Team

Manor School’s Green Team was the first of its kind in Marin. Each year, more than sixty 3rd through 5th grade students sign up to help take care of the environment at Manor School. The children learn about Seven Key Actions and then help to implement these actions on campus. The Seven Actions are: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Compost, Be Waste Free, Be Water Wise, Be Energy Efficient and Help Our Schoolyard to be Habitat Friendly.

The children sign up to monitor the three lunch areas each day of the week. They teach all of the other students and staff about being as waste-free as possible at lunch time. They make sure that all items that can be recycled or composted go into the correct bins, and that as little as possible goes to the landfill. By being careful monitors, the Green Team has helped Manor school reduce our landfill waste by 33%.

We have also been working with Marin Sanitary for many years, and in 2017 we are excited to begin participating in their Zero Waste program. Green Team students will be trained about Zero Waste, and will in turn teach the school community.

At each week’s school-wide Wednesday Welcome, members of the Green Team make announcements about the Seven Actions to help educate the entire school community about the environment. From tips on saving energy to explaining why we must always conserve water, the Green Team has helped to teach other students every week for many years.

The Green Team has certified our gardens and nature trail as Bay Friendly and Habitat Friendly by the National Wildlife Federation. Green Team students help to take care of the habitat gardens.

The Green Team had Manor school certified as a Green School by Marin’s Green Business program. This involved doing water and energy audits, and reducing waste.

Green Team students support environmental causes such as Project Coyote, Save the Frogs, Save the Redwoods League, African Wildlife Trust and many others. The Green Team Club makes organic, fair trade chocolates to raise money to donate to their causes. They also get involved in speaking up for wildlife and the environment at meetings including the Fairfax Town Council, the Marin County Board of Supervisors, California Fish and Game and more. They write their own speeches for these presentations. They also write an annual Green Team Newsletter to share their passion for taking care of our precious environment.

The most important thing is that Green Team members feel proud of themselves for helping, and they truly make a difference!

Children for Change

Children for Change is a district-wide extracurricular, service-learning club that combines fun, learning and doing good for others. Parents facilitate the club, though it is driven by the children and their areas of interest in helping others towards the club’s mission of empowering children to make a difference in their world.

At the beginning of the year, the kids brainstorm to determine those avenues of ‘good’ they would like to explore, which will determine some of the activities for the year. Clubs will do local community service projects at Manor School and throughout Marin.

Local community service projects include volunteer opportunities at food banks, soup kitchens, elder care facilities, residences for differently-abled people, beach and park clean-up, and many others.

Children For Change at Manor School meets weekly on Mondays during lunch in Room 15, and is open to all 3rd-5th graders.
